FAQs About Illinois Tollways

Take a look at some of the most common questions about Illinois tollways that could affect your fleet.

1. How Much Are Tolls in Illinois?

The price of tolls in Illinois depends on many factors, including the type of vehicle, time of day and toll road. For example, for trucks during the daytime, you can expect to pay anywhere from $0.50 to $18.30 depending on the size of the vehicle and whether you're using an I-PASS or paying online. For trucks driving overnight, the toll prices range from $0.30 to $13.80.

The five tollways in the Illinois Tollway system are:

  1. Tri-State Tollway (I-94/I-294/I-80)
  2. Jane Addams Memorial Tollway (I-90)
  3. Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88)

2. What Is the Difference Between I-Pass and E-ZPass?

I-Pass is the official Illinois State Toll Highway Authority electronic toll collection system that drivers can use in 17 states, including Florida. E-ZPass is the electronic toll collection system that drivers use for tolls throughout 18 states. Drivers can use E-ZPass and I-Pass on Illinois State Toll Highway Authority roads and the Chicago Skyway.

3. How Do I Pay Tolls in Illinois?

Your trucking fleet operators can pay tolls in Illinois using an I-Pass or E-Z pass transponder. Traditional methods like cash or card payments are also available. After driving on Illinois toll roads, drivers can also pay online using the Pay by Plate service. If your driver misses a toll on the Illinois Tollway, they can use this online payment service for up to 10 days after driving on the toll road.

Keep in mind the Pay by Plate service cannot be used for missed tolls on the Chicago Skyway.

4. What Happens If I Don't Pay My Toll?

Tolls must be paid within 14 days of driving on the toll road. If not, you will receive an invoice with the charge for the unpaid tolls. If you don't pay the toll online, you will be mailed the invoice. You can also dispute the license plate image or an unpaid toll on the Illinois Tollway website.
